Hofner Club guitar c.1961 photos

January 29, 2013

Photos from 2009 of a Hofner Club guitar, serial number 1649, which I believe dates it to 1961.  The guitar obviously needed restoration but was in good condition overall at the time the photos were taken.  The photos were taken in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, England when the guitar was owned by the composer Ian Hawkridge.

A great example of the Höfner Club 50 model. I would say it was produced in 1960 as it has “Toaster” pickups but may have shipped in 1961. Don’t restore it as it will not only halve its value, it will lose the perfect aged look that it has now. It is all there, original, which is unusual for a guitar of this age.

I’m glad to have confirmation that I got the date about right. I used the database of serial numbers you can download from the Hofner website. The guitar was sold soon after the photos were taken and was bought by a guitar shop, so I assume they will have restored it and sold it. But you are right there is a certain romance to all the scratches.
